Day 1: Srinagar & Dal Lake
No trip to Kashmir is complete without spending at least a day exploring Srinagar, the summer capital city, and the adjoining Dal Lake.
Start your first morning by taking a shikara ride on the peaceful waters of Dal, passing by colorful houseboats and witnessing locals going about their daily lake life.
Make stops at some of the famous Mughal gardens like Shalimar and Nishat Bagh that showcase terraced lawns, fountains and pavilions.
End your day by witnessing the sunset over the Himalayas from Dal Lake as it casts a lovely orange glow and gets mirrored in the waters below.
Day 2: Pahalgam
After getting your fill of Srinagar, head 96 km south on NH 1A to the breathtaking Pahalgam valley. This Kashmir itinerary day is all about scenic vistas and mountain air.
On your way, stop at Avantipur temple ruins and walk amongst the ancient site flanked by chinar trees. In Pahalgam, don’t miss camping beside the gurgling Lidder river and hiking up to the panoramic Aru Valley & Betaab Valley.
End your day with some energetic trout fishing in the river as you take in the spectacle of Himalayan peaks on all sides.
Day 3: Gulmarg
It’s time to hit the slopes! In about 2 hours, arrive in the Meadow of Flowers – Gulmarg. Take the world’s highest operating Gondola cable car ride up to Kongdoori Mountain at 13,780 feet for awe-inspiring views.
Try some beginner skiing or snowboarding with the help of local guides, or go sledding in the flower laden alpine slopes. Take Instagram worthy pics of the frozen Alpather Lake and bask in the views of the majestic Apharwat peak.
In the evening, have steaming cups of Kashmir’s renowned Kahwa tea to wrap up Gulmarg’s magic.
Day 4: Sonamarg
Drive past swaying conifers and gushing streams to reach Sonamarg, translating to ‘The Meadow of Gold’. True to its name, the landscape is carpeted in gold hued flowers set against white peaks.
Hike up to the Thajiwas Glacier for stunning mountain views or take an adventurous river rafting expedition along the Sindh river’s rapids to get your adrenaline fix.
Camp under billions of twinkling stars and wake up to an unforgettable sight of dawn rays kissing Himalayan peaks.
Day 5: Great Himalayan National Park
Cap off your 5 day Kashmir itinerary by trekking in the Kullu region’s Great Himalayan National Park.
Established in 1984, this UNESCO site spans 754 sq km and is home to endangered animals like snow leopards, musk deer as well as vibrant flora and fauna.
